The Textile Rental Services Association (TRSA) marked a historic milestone in August, celebrating the 60th anniversary of its Executive Management Institute (EMI) with a commencement ceremony that honored 35 graduating Year IV students and featured significant announcements about the future of the program, according to a news release.
Held at the Marriott Hotel and Conference Center near the University of Maryland, the event was filled with praise from students, alumni, and faculty. TRSA President and CEO Joseph Ricci announced two major changes: the retirement of longtime EMI Dean and instructor Dr. Kent Baker and the relocation of EMI to a new venue in suburban Chicago beginning next year.
“After more than a decade at this location, we’re moving EMI to a more central area of the U.S.,” Ricci said. “This decision was based on feedback from students, our Board of Directors, and other stakeholders. The Marriott team has been fantastic, but it’s time for a new chapter.”
The new location will offer resort-style amenities, enhancing the learning and networking experience for future EMI participants.
Dr. Baker, who has served EMI since 1976, was honored with a crystal glass award and a commemorative cake. A video tribute featured testimonials from alumni, including Mark Spence of ImageFIRST and former TRSA Chair Jim Buik, who praised Baker’s decades of dedication, leadership, and impact on the industry.
“Dr. Kent Baker is the pedigree of greatness, passion, and commitment to excellence,” said Buik. “He’s one of the primary reasons EMI is the crown jewel of TRSA.”
Beyond EMI, Baker’s career includes 229 peer-reviewed articles, 45 books, and leadership roles at Georgetown, the University of Maryland, and American University. Following the passing of his wife Linda, Baker made the largest individual donation to American University’s School of Education, which now bears both their names.
Reflecting on his time at EMI, Baker said, “This has never been a job for me. It’s always been a pleasure. I’ve learned as much from you as you’ve hopefully learned from me.”
The ceremony also recognized 11 graduates from TRSA’s Production Management Institute (PMI) who completed their two-year program at the same time and featured heartfelt remarks from students across all EMI years. Year I student Jason Zellner of Alsco Uniforms praised the week’s learning and networking opportunities, and welcomed the move to Chicago, noting its convenience for Midwestern participants.
TRSA’s EMI continues to be a cornerstone of leadership development in the linen, uniform, and facility services industry, and the 60th anniversary celebration underscored its enduring legacy and bright future.
